AAA Arizona is spreading the holiday cheer – with peanut butter. The auto club is looking to make the holidays happier for area underprivileged families with a statewide drive that aims to collect toys as well as the item most needed by food banks: peanut butter.
The goal is to load a AAA tow truck with at least 1,000 jars of peanut butter to help illustrate the growing need by food banks to receive the simple and nutritious item.
“This year we wanted to make a special effort to collect the item that will have the biggest impact on our children and families,” said Mike Tully, president of AAA Arizona. “Peanut butter runs out quickly at food banks but is a vital protein source for children. We also wanted to educate the community on this need, so they are aware of the impact they are making.”
From Monday, Nov. 10, through Friday, Dec. 5, AAA is encouraging members and non-members alike to donate plastic jars of peanut butter and new, unwrapped toys at any of its 12 branch locations statewide. All peanut butter collected in the Valley will be donated to the St. Mary’s Food Bank, which provides meals to food banks and families Valley wide.
Toys donated will go to the Family Service Agency (FSA), which collects children’s toys for all age groups. AAA Arizona worked closely with FSA over the holidays last year to launch its first-ever family adoption program that assisted less fortunate families across the state with necessities such as beds, microwaves, clothing and toys, among others.
