LOCAL SARA LEE DISTRIBUTOR DONATES MORE THAN 21,000 PECAN AND SWEET POTATO PIES TO FILL HOLIDAY BOXES AT ST. MARY’S FOOD BANK

Sara Lee Also Donates 80,000 Packages of Beef Sausage for Christmas Boxes

Sara Lee Foods Distribution Center in Tolleson continued their year-long support of St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance by donating more than 21,000 pecan and sweet potato pies just in time for the holiday season.  Some of the pies were included in the more than 14,000 holiday food boxes – feeding more than 100,000 Arizonans – that were distributed in the four days leading up to Thanksgiving.

Sara Lee didn’t stop there. It has also committed to donating more than 80,000 14-ounce packages of their beef smoked sausage next week, adding a much-needed protein component to the Holiday food Boxes distributed between now and the Christmas holiday.

The latest donations are in addition to the  food donated by Sara Lee this year, enough to provide nearly 300,000 meals,  and the long-time Food Bank supporters continue to lend a hand with several signature events – from the Albertsons Kids Cafe Open golf tournament in April, to the Send Hunger Packing summer hunger awareness campaign, to October’s National Student Food Drive, when Sara Lee handed out snacks to students at eight different locations.

In between, Sara Lee is a regular donor to St. Mary’s Food Rescue program and a willing partner is several other Food Bank activities. Local Sara Lee employees volunteer regularly at the Food Bank’s Del E. Webb Distribution Center and have served as a catalyst for other Sara Lee employees to get involved with Food Banks in their communities and take such projects to a national scale.

“St. Mary’s would like to thank Sara Lee for all their efforts on behalf of the hungry of Arizona, in particular the wonderful donations that will add so much to our Holiday Food Boxes,” said St. Mary’s President and CEO Terry Shannon. “Sara Lee has been and remains one of the champions in the fight against hunger in our state, and we are very appreciative of our partnership over the years.”
