On Wednesday, April 6th, Sleep America and KSLX Morning DJ, Mark Mayfield, will kick-off its fifth annual “Get in Bed with Mark” Food Drive for St. Mary’s Food Bank. The three day LIVE radio promotion will kick off at Sleep America’s Glendale location on 73rd Avenue and Bell Road at 5:00 a.m. on April 6th and run until Friday, April 8th – traveling to a different Sleep America location each day. “We’ve been looking forward to this event all year! It’s our goal to raise enough food in hopes that no one goes to bed hungry this spring,” said Debbie Gaby, Sleep America President.
KSLX Morning show host Mayfield will literally get in bed – aboard a flat bed truck – and stay in bed until the Sleep America truck is filled with food. Local celebrities will make visits to show their support and help get Mark out of bed. Every person who drops off canned food and/or donates money will be eligible to enter to win the queen size Kingsdown bed Mark will be on for three days.
This year, Sleep America will introduce a new and exciting event for the last day. On April 8th, the Paradise Valley location will host “The Great Bed Race for Charity.” The bed race will be the very first one of its kind in the Valley. “We tend to think about donating food only around the major holidays, but people need to eat 365 days a year,” said Mayfield. “We might not be able to save the whole world, but we’re committed to doing what we can to at least help those in our area.” Thirty-seven Sleep America locations are serving as drop-off points throughout the month of March in hopes to aid our local food bank’s mission to feed thousands of hungry families across Arizona.
Last year the event collected over 29,000 lbs. of non-perishable food items and $14,352 in monetary donations during the three days. The food bank currently needs non-perishable food items like tuna, beans, pasta, canned vegetables, rice, cereal, juice (in plastic bottles) peanut butter and baby food.
