KSLX-FM’S Mark Mayfield & Sleep America to Host 5th Annual ‘Get In Bed With Mark’ Food Drive to Benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank

Three-day Radio-thon Runs From April 6-8 All Over The Valley With Goal Of Spreading the Word About Dire Hunger Issues Now Affecting Arizona

Phoenix – Fast-becoming an early-April Arizona tradition, KSLX (100.7 FM)’s morning man Mark Mayfield is getting ready to get back into his Sleep America bed for the fifth annual “Get in Bed with Mark” food drive to benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance.

One of the Valley’s most popular morning personalities, Mayfield will begin his three-day live marathon at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6 at Sleep America’s Glendale location at the Lane Home Furnishings Center (7291 W. Bell Road, Ste. 101A). He will literally hop into a Sleep America bed aboard a flat-bed truck and collect both non-perishable food items and cash donations for St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance – all while interviewing local celebrities, holding challenges, and talking about the need in Arizona.

At the end of the drive, Mayfield will raffle off the queen size Kingsdown bed, provided by Sleeping America, which will have served as his home for the three-day radiothon. And this year, Sleep America will introduce a new and exciting event for the last day. On April 8th, the Paradise Valley location will host “The Great Bed Race for Charity.” Five-member teams can still sign up for their place in the field with a $100 donation to the Food Bank.

“Get in Bed with Mark” collected more than 18,000 pounds of non-perishable food items and more than $14,000 in cash last year – providing more than 116,000 meals for St. Mary’s Food Bank to distribute to the hungry of Arizona. KSLX, Sleep America and St. Mary’s are all hoping to duplicate the success of last year’s event.

Mayfield and his Sleep America bed will leave the Glendale location at 10pm on the 6th, and from 6am – 10pm on Thursday, April 7, he will be at Tempe Marketplace (2010 E. Rio Salado Pkwy, Ste. 115) giving the East Valley listeners a chance to participate. The drive will finish off at the Paradise Valley Mall (4320 E. Cactus Road, Ste. A1) from 6am – 6 p.m. on Friday, April 8, with the Great Bed Race capping almost 50 hours live on the air.

Phoenix Symphony Food Drive

Proudly serving the citizens of metropolitan Phoenix and Arizona since 1947, the Phoenix Symphony endures as a cultural treasure in its 63rd year. And the state’s only full-time professional orchestra will again conduct a food drive to benefit another Arizona institution – St. Mary’s Food Bank – during its March 26-28 performances of “Star Wars Mania” at Symphony Hall.

Prior to each performance, St. Mary’s volunteers will be stationed outside the Hall to accept food and cash donations. St. Mary’s distributes enough food to provide 300,000 meals to 13 of Arizona’s 15 counties, and the need is greater than it has ever been with housing foreclosures and unemployment so prevalent in the state.

So before enjoying conductor Robert Moody and the Symphony’s tribute to the magnificent scores of John Williams, help St. Mary’s Food Bank continue its mission of feeding the hungry each day. Each dollar donated to the food bank can provide several meals to the one in 12 seniors and one in five children in Arizona who struggle with hunger issues.

“We are very pleased and appreciative of this opportunity to partner with the wonderful Phoenix Symphony and thank them for its continued support,” said St. Mary’s Food Bank President and CEO Terry Shannon. “There is no way the Food Bank would be able to accomplish its mission without such committed partners and the continuing generosity of the people of Arizona.”

Seven-year-old Cody wants to raise food for Food Bank

Seven-year-old Cody Mitchell was watching the evening news on television with his grandmother one night at their Glendale home when a reporter began talking about a 12-year-old boy who had been holding a charity book sale in his neighborhood.

He was holding the drive for the fifth consecutive year – something he started when he was only seven.

Cody watched. He smiled. And then he looked at his grandmother.
“I could do that,” he said.

And apparently, the first grader from Challenger charter School can “do that.” Now several weeks into his drive, Cody has collected over 200 books from family, friends and fellow parishioners at Desert Valley Light & Life Church.

Cody selected St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance as the organization he wanted to help because “people really need food right now” and will hold the “Books for Food” sale in his driveway at 5638 W. Greenbrier Drive on Saturday, Aug. 29.

“He’s a great kid and he really cares about people,” Cody’s mother, Elizabeth Mitchell, said. “His grandmother lives with us and Cody is always checking on her, making sure she doesn’t need anything and trying to help out. And when he saw a chance to help more people, he really got excited.”

ody is getting the word out and getting people excited about his drive. A fellow parishioner at his church who has visited St. Mary’s Food Bank in Glendale made Cody a T-shirt that reads “Help Me Feed the Hungry!!” for him to wear when speaking about the event and show off on the big day.

Paperback books will be sold for 50 cents, or one non-perishable food item, with hardbacks going slightly higher. Cody has already collected several bags of food from people supporting his effort and he plans to take the money raised from the drive to a nearby Costco market where can go shopping for the items the Food Bank needs the most.

“He’s putting all his time into collecting books, talking to people about how they can help and having the biggest drive possible,” Elizabeth Mitchell said. “As a mother, it makes you proud to see your child go to that much effort to help people.”

Cody will bring all the food he raised through the event to St. Mary’s in September, and he has also been invited to speak at the SMFBA Board of Directors meeting to talk about his accomplishment.

Anyone interested in donating books or making a cash or food donation to the drive can call (602) 843-0370 until Aug. 28 – the day before the event.Seven-year-old Cody Mitchell
